Our Identity
Why id est?
The Name
“id est” is Latin for “that is to say”. The abbreviated form is “i.e.”, two letters used whenever something needs to be made clearer. A signal that an explanation follows, in plain language.
The Conviction
Clients deserve advice that is independent, clear and honest. No complacency, no inflated language. Many of the companies and people who come to us are challenging the status quo: building something new, rethinking how things are done, pushing into territory that did not exist before. We help make it happen, responsibly.
The Stance
We are not a technology law firm. We are a firm that thinks about technology, for the people building it, for the people affected by it, and for the world it is reshaping. That is what responsible innovation and sustainable business practices look like, and that is what we champion as a firm.
The Future
We do not have a roadmap. We have a compass. It points towards law as an instrument of good, specifically in the clients we choose, in the purpose they are trying to serve, and in the confidence that a firm can be legally expert, commercially serious, morally awake, and trusted as a partner rather than a service provider.
Our Values
Because we care
Our values are in the room: in how we talk to clients, how we react when something does not sit right, how we choose the work we take on and the work we turn down.
Empathy
We listen before we advise, and take seriously the fact that behind every innovation there is a project, a business, or a cause that matters to someone.
Trust
We cultivate strong relationships based on integrity, honesty and transparency. Clients hear our honest assessment on fees, strategy, or risk. We do not pretend to know everything. When we are unsure, we say so. That is not a sales pitch; that is how professional relationships should work.
Hard Work
Dedication, commitment and diligence are the cornerstones of our success. We have no time to waste. The stakes are real. But we refuse to believe that rigour and warmth are mutually exclusive. We enjoy what we do, we enjoy the people we do it with, and we think that shows in the work.
Independence
Our advice is independent. We tell clients what we think, not what they want to hear. Where it is uncomfortable, it is usually the reason it was asked for.
Curiosity
We want to understand what our clients are building, not just what needs signing.
Simplicity
Clear language. No unnecessary layers. We are not trying to be the biggest firm in the room. We are trying to be the one that actually helps.
Our Rankings
What the guides
actually say
Legal rankings are an imperfect measure: they tend to favour size and visibility, neither of which is an objective we have pursued. Appearing in them consistently nonetheless means that our peers and competitors regard us as active and credible, and that clients are willing to say so publicly. Everything listed below is a firm or department ranking; individual placements sit on each lawyer's profile.
